There are three different GT6 oil pumps. Early ones have a cast iron body,
the middle ones have an alloy body, square type pick up but the same length
rotor kit. Late ones (fitted to most Mk IIIs) have a microphone type gauze
pick up (alloy body) but most important a longer rotor set. The pump was
changed in all other Triumph six cylinder engines at the same time, so TR5s
and early 6s have the square pick up type - all post 71 engines have the
bigger pump. You may be interested to know that a service bulletin was
issued for the square pick up type as the inverted gauze is prone to
clogging - dealers were told to loosen the sump enough to prise the gauze
off the pump and run without one.
