I don't think I would use "shear" in the context of handling... "sheer"
doesn't scare me as much ;-)

I agree that the handling on te highway with the 3/4" bar is very stable,
but I never noticed it feeling "unstable" before the bar. OTOH, I find that
the 3/4" bar allows me to do a lot more tight handling maneuvers a lot
faster at an autocross that the previous configurations (no bar and stock
bar) did. Maybe I just don't know how to drive it without a bar; perfectly
possible... I dream of the day that I won't be the limiting factor in my
autocross times.

If you want less lean, put in a stiffer bar. If you aren't planning to
autocross, an 11/16" bar with poly mounting bushings is probably adequate.
My 3/4" Winner's Circle bar uses hard nylon bushings and rose-jointed links.
