It's very hard to get washing soda around here, so I use Lye in my tank. 
But washing soda or baking soda are both caustic solutions because they 
are bases.

Not so sure about its effect on brass, but the solution is anything but 
caustic.  It is merely a solution of washing soda and water.  Some 
folks use baking soda and water, but I understand washing soda is a better 
choice.  Only thing about using baking soda solution is if you happen to 
get heartburn during the process. . . .
