I just use tap water, but if you have a cheap source of distilled, like from 
your air conditioner or dehumidifier, probably best to use it.   Also a 
teaspoon or so of dish detergent serves as the wetting agent, unless you want 
to 
spend more money for "Water Wetter" brand name.  I don't remember exactly how 
much to use--don't want to use too much to the point that you get suds. lol

Yep--Probably U-joints.  Not a real difficult or expensive fix.  Crawl under 
there and check them out.
