unisyn or pointy thingys

Hello spridgets,

  i have a poor quality unisyn... when i put it over the carb throat
  dialed enough to get the bead to raise, it chokes the car out almost
  to death... i have a set of the old style pointy things that you put
  a tube into the dashpot, then make the arms aim at one another to
  for a visual inspection of the level of the needles...

  any hints, tips comments, caveats (latin for warnings) about using
  them?
