I have a KAC-745. But it does have the input sensitivity controls. But
it measures the input in Volts, not Watts. I'll try it at minimum (1.0V)
and increase from there as you suggest.

I think I have the same or similar power amp you are discribing, and
grabbed
my instruction manual. Kenwood KAC-846 amplifier is not compatible with
speaker level inputs. The Kenwood KAC-746 has both RCA and speaker level
inputs. If you have a model without speaker level inputs, I am fairly
sure
you will not be able to use that stereo with that amp.
The input sensitivity control chart in the manual says that if the
maximum
output of the stereo is 10W set to 0.3V, 15W set to 0.5V, and 25W set to
1.0V.
If you have the unit with only RCA inputs, and still want to try running
speaker level stereo output to the RCA inputs, adjust the sensitivity to
the
minimum setting. Make sure the stereo volume is all the way down when
you
power up the system. Gradually increase the volume control until the
sound
level is either loud enough or 1/2 the way to max. If you have turned up
the volume 1/2 the way, and it is not loud enough, and it is not
distorting,
you can increase the sensitivity slightly, alternating between
increasing
the volume and the sensitivity until the maximum distortion free sound
level
is acheived.
