Original Bugeye door latches had shims. At least one on each side, 
sometimes (maybe) 2.
They are just thin metal which you can whip up with a drill and 
grindstone in a minute or 2. Trace the back side of the latch on a piece 
of 24 gauge aluminum or similar, cut and file to match the latch, drill 
2 holes.
A flatened out piece of coppper pipe works too.
