Guess I must be a "fanatic too, then...
My bike travels have taken me:

Coast to coast more times than I can remember...8? 10?
Twice around mainland Europe - 8 countries,
Once around the entire Mediterranian (when you still could!),
London to Bombay and Ret.
49 States of the Union,
Houston and around the four corners in 12 days,
Houston, TX to Bogota and ret.
Houston, TX to Fairbanks, AK and ret.
Dodge City to Prudoe Bay, AK and ret.
And a bazillion short trips (circa 2K miles)...

The AlCan highway was all mud and gravel in 1975 - 1200 miles of it both
ways.
The Dalton Highway (to Prudoe Bay) is still all loose rock (I'm not
charitable
enough to call it "gravel")
High Plains gravel roads are long and straight and great for travel away
from
the maddening crowds! A bazillion miles on them, too! Avoid the deep
gravel!
One year I followed the original Oregon Trail route (mostly gravel roads and
fields) From St. Louis west to the Rockies in Wyoming. Another time it
was the Santa Fe trail from Franklin MO to Santa Fe, NM.

It's getting harder these days what with Arthur and carpal tunnel kicking in
and I can't ride the 1,000 mile days any more. Next one I want to do is
to follow old Rt. 66 for as much of its original distance as possible....

Ride Safe!
