Haha... funny you should mention that...

Long before my Rock & roll days, I was quite the take myself serious jazz
trumpet player. (as opposed to the take my own bullshit serious asshole that
I am these days)

I realized at 19 that no matter how good I was, I could expect a life
playing in Maynard Ferguson's band, living on a bus, makin' $300 or $400 a
week (70's). So, I learned guitar, and made a living as a lead vocalist in a
variety of bands, and studio & jingle work.

I recently decided to pick up trumpet again... bought one on E-bay... and in
the WST style of one is never enough, kept my open for one like I had years
ago. I found one locally, and intended to buy it after the holidays. Nancy
beat me to it, and gave it to me for Christmas.

I approached playing this time around with the hope of destroying any bad
habits, and rebuilding a new embouchure with some serious lead chops. I have
been amazed at how much the "science" of playing has advanced in the last 25
years, and , of course, the internet makes nearly all of it available in an
instant. I've managed to regularly knock out some double A's, which start to
border in Maynard range... something I could never do when I played as a
young man. I figure a solid year of practice might actually give me some
reliable chops, so that I might sit in with a few big bands that play for
nothing, or next to nothing in the area.

So, yes indeed... those of you looking to attend SOS '06, the Summer of
Love, bring your axe, damnit...whether it's a fiddle, guitar, or spoons.
We'll make noise. Maybe we'll even make music.

Many years ago, on a distant planet far, far way, when I was actually young,

I played a brand-spanking new Conn fibreglass Sousaphone. Played it with
gusto, too, if I do say so myself. It looked a lot like this (but not quite
as blue): http://www.dillonmusic.com/usedimages/0811200515742PM.jpg
Unfortunately, the high school wouldn't let me take it with me once I
finally, eventually graduated.
