Abrasive blast media

What is the best all around media for blasting. I am thinking of
getting one of those cheap counter top blast units from Harbor Fright.
I want to be able to blast some Bugeye wheels, as well as the smog
pump and gulp valve, so that they can be primed and painted.
What works best without pitting, aluminum oxide, glass beads, or soda
(I assume this is just plain old baking soda?)
