Cosmoline is a wax/oil mixture. I would have (and have) left it on the 
bearings and let the hot engine oil wash it off on start up.
You do clean cosmo off electrical contacts (points) and anything that 
needs painting.
But if it is supposed to be oiled or greased, leave the cosmo alone.
