Doug,
Others may have other procedures, but I fill
everything possible with oil - the filter, the feed
lines to the filter, the oil pressure pick up hole,
etc. I don't do a bilge pump, but on of those spots
should work. After setting static timing, I squirt a
small amount of oil into the cylinders. With the plugs
still out, I turn it over with the starter until the
oil pressure comes up on the gauge. Some may say 15
psi is OK, 50 or 60 is better. This isn't a bad time
to check the compression. Replace plugs, tighten up
everything one more time, start it, run it for 20-25
miutes at 2500 - 3000 RPM. You're bedding in the cam
and lifters at this point, not really seating the
rings. Watch temperatures, as friction will be high
and temps higher than normal, typically. If it
overheats or oil pressure drops, stop. Don't slow the
motor down - just stop. The cam / lifters don't like
low RPM yet. Finish running, look for leaks, check
plugs, etc. Adjust valves, re-torque head (I left this
out once and it bit me). Change oil, drive it like you
stole it.
The rings will seat over time with varied engine
speeds.
