No, that was a different crash.... the one you refer to was Tony Drews at
Road America, and was indeed a broken axle. That took place about 5 years
ago.

The one I referred to took place at Blackhawk Farms.

I like your idea of the shoulder being too long.  I was thinking he
bought cheap lug nuts and over-torqued them.  Some studs sheared and
some maybe just stripped and let the lug nuts slide off.
I've seen a video of that TR4 crash.  I thought that TR4 broke an
axle.  Great video, the guy trashes the car and when he catches his
breath he says something like "Well, that sucks."
