And I'd have to ask why you would want to convert to tapered roller
bearings, in the first place......yes; the OE ball bearings are
completely capable of handling whatever loads you impose upon them.
And, yes, there are Spridgets racing (very successfully) with the ball
bearings (I know of one particularly successful one, just a few years
ago, from SCCA CENDIV)
And, which one of the "engineers that designed the bearings" did you
hear that from???? How many decades has it been since a new bearing, in
that particular size and load rating, was designed?????
Now, a "bearing engineer" might tell you that the spacer is ridiculous,
but, he would be thinking only of whether or not the BEARINGS need the
spacer, or not. I think we both know that he would have no interest
(nor the training) to determine whether or not the loads placed upon the
spindle would require that spacer.
Uh, "long bolt method"? I'm afraid you'll need to enlighten me on that
one, David.

That is perfectly true, IF YOU ARE USING THE BALL BEARINGS.
If, however, you are converting to tapered roller bearings, it is a
different story. You are all welcome to your own opinions, and no
offense intended here, either, but the engineers that designed the
bearings think that the spacer is ridiculous. Let me guess, you are
also one of the proponents of the "long bolt method"?
