I have quite a few Spike Jones things. I think my favorite CD of his music
was the album named "Spiked!" which was bold enough NOT to simply collect
the same old standards as everybody else. Instead, they sought out some of
the good stuff that most of us never heard. My favorite was his unfinished
work called "Frantic Freeway". It never got any lyrics, but the music is
great fun. The album ends with Spike's rendition of "The Nutcracker Suite".
I had been looking for it unsuccessfully for years. Growing up I used to
listen to it on the reel-to-reel tapes that my parents had pirated from a
relative's two disk set on 78rpm (the flip side of the tape was the pirating
of Burl Ives' great children's album of 1958 entitled "Captain Burl Ives'
Ark"; just TRY to find that one!). It was nice to get it on CD and find out
what all the broken tapes were missing ;-)
