Well said.

Some States only require $10,000 or $20,000 liability coverage. In some cases,
that equates to a visit to the emergency room.

This is another reason why you need someone to explain your options on these
coverages.

For example, when you try to ask a State Specific question to someone at one
of these gorilla-sized 1-800 companies the person on the other end of the
phone who is "licensed" to sell insurance in all 50 states, know little or
nothing about what is available to you in your own state.

For example, in Connecticut, you can purchase uninsured motorists coverage up
to double the limit you carry for liability protection and as an option you
can make it excess over any other collectible insurance.

Some insurance companies actually offer it as an option on their million
dollar Umbrella policies.

Another two cents on insurance, to amplify Jay's comments. Make sure you
have
plenty of uninsured/underinsured coverage. Inevitably, the person who hits
you
will have little or no coverage.

It's not just the damage you cause to others that you have to worry about
(liability). If you're hurt and have big medical bills and/or can't work,
that
coverage has to come from the other guy. Since you can't be sure he has
(enough) insurance, you buy your own coverage to replace what he doesn't
have.
That's called uninsured/underinsured coverage. It's mandatory in Illinois
where I live, but not everywhere. The loss of your Spridget is unfortunate,
but it's not much compared to what you can lose if you get splattered by an
SUV and can't work or worse.
