My car has an alternator and is negative earth...stoopid mistake on my part
(the typo, not the alternator)

Positive earth AND an alternator???
Positive earth alternators were never available on Spridgets and are
VERY rare anywhere else. At any rate, I would lay odds that, if you
disconnect the alternator, the current flow will cease, indicating
fried semiconductors in the alternator. Or a regulator problem if it
is an external regulator.
