Jim,

Sorry not to get back to you earlier.

I could not get a socket on that nut because the steering arm is in the way
but with calipers it appears to be 1 and 13/16" - just as you have found.

I have undone this nut on my TR3 (to remove the timing cover and replace a
broken timing chain tensioner).  I used the time-honoured practice of using
a socket on the nut with a breaker bar.  The breaker bar was positioned
under a frame member and then I just hit the starter button.  Worked just
fine.  The thread is a normal ie lefty loosey, righty tighty.
