I just got home and caught all your emails. Tough day at the races...
As for fuel pump, why go aftermarket at all? Order a brand new SU fuel
pump. The new ones are solid state and will last almost forever. When you
consider how frustrating it has been going through napa pumps, throw in the
towel and order the real thing from Ed or Peter. If they don't have them,
SU pumps are listed on ebay.
As for the fuel filter, only one person has suggested putting it before the
pump, everybody else suggested putting it after. The way I see it, if you
have the strainer intact in the tank, any bit large enough to damage the
fuel pump would be caught in the tank strainer. You want the filter as
close to the carburetors as possible, to catch any sediment that may be in
the fuel due to dirty fuel, fuel tank rusting, fuel pump wear, hose
disintegration, and fuel line rusting.
As for the slow crank, look in the following order:
Loose or coroded connections
Weak or faulty battery
Starter Motor failure.
The symptoms sounded to me like starter motor failure. Tell tale signs are
that is had been cranking ok but requiring more and more current to perform,
that is sounded like a weak battery, and finally that you had enough current
to smell hot electrical, but still no cranking.
Good luck.
