Listers -

A few years ago, Jay Leno showed up at Santa Monica Airport for British Wings
and Wheels, with a RR Phantom III with a Merlin (from a Mosquito bomber, he
said) installed. It drove a cross-shaft through a 3-speed trans. The
cross-shaft ran sprockets for a chain final drive. Jay said that he normally
only used third gear once the beast got rolling. Also, he claimed that the
body, a boat-tailed speedster, was from a RR-engined speedboat from the
'20's.

What would be really neat is to make a 1/3 scale Merlin and put it in the
Sprite.

Let's see, the original made around 1200 hp. A third of that would be about
400hp. I could live with that. Heck even 1/4 scale would be fine.

Also, I seem to remember a Road and Track issue from the 70's where they put

a real Merlin in a Jag XJ.

Next time you think how complicated the 1275 is, check out this scale
British engine.
