Doesn't all of this change the width of the track?

Alan,
Yes you can use the longer steel wheel axles but you will have to remove
some of the splined end. Install your steel axle as far as it will go, then
make sure the hub carrier is pulled out towards you as far as it will go,
then measure the gap between the axle flange and the hub carrier then remove
about 1/16" more. Check for fit. I'ved used a power hacksaw for this and
you will be surprised how quickly it saws thru the axle. Clean up the sawed
end with a
fine fine and your done. Yes there is plently of spline left so as not to
bind inside the spyder gear.

I recall several discussions about simply swapping rear axles from a wire
wheeled rear banjo assembly to a solid banjo to allow wire wheels to be used
or convert an early MK to wires There was a concern about the length of the
axles and not engaging to the same extent inside the read diff.

I am working with a situation that might lead to going the other way ,
meaning using solid rimed axles in a wire wheeled banjo Is it safe to say
that the solid axles are longer and therefore may not fit in a narrower wire
wheeled banjo?

Just taking a look at doing something and later finding out it won't work I
plan to measure 2 axles at some point once I gather them up and can take
some comparisons side by side
