I might be making this more difficult in my mind than it really is.  I 
had thought about using the 2x4 and one person on each side of the car, 
but that doesn't give much control.

Here is the little car in question:

I don't own the V8 Taurus SHO anymore, my email is leftover from those 
days.  I still drive a V8 but these days its a little bigger, a 6.0L LS2 
in a Cadillac CTS-V.

Somebody else raised a good point though-
I had not thought about using my garage rafters partly because they 
aren't accessable above the garage ceiling and partly because I was 
worried about the weight.  However I weigh a lot more than 150 pounds 
and I've been in the attic standing on a single rafter.  I can put a few 
lag bolts into 2 rafters and that should be plenty good.
