Phil,

Tying down the wheels leaving the suspension active is the preferred method.  I 
use fairly in expensive tie down straps from CostCo or any other source. I use 
two straps per wheel, one forward the other to the rear.  I have. Wire wheels 
and wrap the straps around the knock off hub.  For disk wheels the straps can 
go through the slots over a rag protect the rim.

On one trip we lost the axel on the trailer, the trailer with car tipped up 45 
degrees before coming to rest right side up.  The car did not move!
