I would add one thing. The points burn up pretty quickly. You don't know
whether or not the condenser failed until the car quits or just won't start.
A condenser is just an arc suppression capacitor.  If the car is running and
the points aren't burned up, the condenser does not need to be replaced.
Carrying a spare set of point and a condenser is good insurance. It will
prevent the one in the car from failing.  :-)

the function of the capacitor is to reduce the voltage spike caused the
coils induced hysteresis reaction as the points open and close.
The spark burns (and sometimes welds) the points.
You will continue to run with an open circuit capacitor but not with a short
circuited capacitor.
Moral? Carry a spare capacitor - it's cheap insurance <g>
