Watch out! It's a slippery slope! Rebuild the engine, then the transmission
that was whining in first and reverse will be next, so you'll have to decide
whether to rebuild or go with a Datsun 5 speed conversion, etc, etc. It only
builds from there.
Never mind any of that, why didn't you guys ask him the important
questions? Like what do you think of cats, guns and Frank Zappa? You won't be
able to avoid the discussions about religion and politics that go along with
some of these guys that live in wintery regions that suffer from cabin fever.

What the heck. Pull the engine and do the full rebuild.
Winter is only half over. You'll have it done by spring.
Plus, with the engine out you can check the condition of the clutch.
