just took the engine out last night, will dissassemble tonight.
upon closer inspection, there was evidentally MORE going on. and the other
pistons are showing signs of ringland heat. there looks like some good info
here, and i have ALLOT to learn this winter!.
stay tuned, more to come.

This quote comes from Robert Kansa's earlier email:

"So there we were...having a great first run at mid Ohio..BOOM...cause was
most probably just stupidity, and an engine that was running fatally
lean-caused detonation, caused meltdown on the front edge of #4 cylinder.
The strange thing was #3 looked great, as did the others. #4 must of had a
weak-hot spot that couldn't take the lean-cold of the morning."

Bob,

Have you considered this yet? The attached web site has a lot of good
information and is where I copied quote below from. Another possibility
which could have been the problem.

"Top Ring End Gap is often a major player when it comes to piston problems.
Top ring butting under high load and heat conditions can destroy the piston
top land. Most top land damage on race pistons appears to lift into the
combustion chamber. The reason is that the top ring ends butt and stick
tight at top-dead-center. Crank rotation pulls the piston down the cylinder
while leaving at least part of the ring and top land at top-dead. Actual end
gap will vary depending on the engine heat load."
