Rick,

Don't get confused by mis-information. Only EARLY 221 and 260 engines
had 2 freeze plugs. When the engine mounts were widened from 6" hole
centers to 7" hole centers the freeze plugs were 3 per side. Your
casting numbers, C4OE-6015E indicate C= decade (1960's), 4= year in
decade (4th), O= small block, E= Engine Division. Thus C4OE means 1964
small block engine division. There are casting numbers, Production
numbers and sevice numbers. ALL 3 may appear somewhere on the part. A
casting number does not identify the part as finished. The production
number tells what they did to the basic casting. For instance, 6010 is
the Casting Number for blocks. 6015 is what they did to it after
machining operations, such as deck height, etc. Where these numbers are
located is important. There are numers near the starter, and on a tag
riveted to the front of the block giving the CID, model year, change
level, year and month of production, and engine code. Sometimes these
are ripped-off. I think the "5G20" designation can be interpreted as an
engine build code. 5= 1965, 4= 1964. G=month, 4=April, 5=May. This is
ot arcane knowledge from secret sources. I simply read HPBooks "How to
rebuild your SMALL-BLOCK FORD published in 1978. Great stuff in here,
but NOT everything. For instance, it lists casting numbers C4OE-B as
1964 260 cid with 3 freeze plugs, C4OE-B again as 1964-1967 289 HiPo 5
bolt. If the bore measures 3.8 inches it's a 260, and if it's 4.0
inches it's a 289 and I'll buy one now, and tell you how to tell if it's
a HiPo.
