All domestic hot water tanks have sacrafcial anodes.  If you look at the top
of the tank you will see the head of a hex bolt to which is attached the
anode.  I believe it's magnesium.  It's usually about 3-4' long and available
from plumbing supply houses.

On tanks that are about 10 yrs. old  there is usually about 3-4 inches left
and this is an anode that's about 3/4" diameter.    Mark
