Rick, 

I did that same repair once (a LOOng time ago..1972) just to fix
those seals (yes, that WAS the problem, oil mileage went
from about 500mi/qt to 2000mi/qt) but I would never attempt
it today.  Just pull the darn thing, rebuild everything and you
won't be disappointed.  A new fresh (and clean and good
looking) motor is worth it...  Hell, it makes it into a new car.
And yes, I would pull it from the bottom.
