There is now a lovely V-6 resting in my garage waiting to nestle into the
Alpine (after a lot of work). The converter/ flex plate was the answer.
I'll have to go buy a manual seeing as how it probably mentions that - - or
- - I could become a real mechanic the hard way and keep flying by the seat
of my pants. Somehow that doesn't seem like much fun.

THANKS to all who gave details to help this novice retain his sanity,

Tim

Go underneath the engine/trans from the front. Unbolt the
torque converter
access panel on the plate that sits between the engine and
transmission (two
bolts). Turn the crankshaft with a ratchet and socket until
one of the nuts
holding the torque converter to the ring gear is accessible
through the access
hole. Undo it. Then turn the crank 60 degrees. Look for the
next nut. Not there?
Go another 30. Not there? Another 30. Undo nuts as they show
up, until you have
3, 4, or 6. Now push the torque converter back into the
transmission until the
studs are clear of the ring gear. Then pry the engine and
trans apart.
