Just thought of another area.  There is a vent hose that runs from port
gas tank to starboard gas tank, directly behind the rear scuttle.  Had a
bad one once and it smelled like gas.  Not exhaust fumes...but gas.

                I had this problem even though I had installed a
complete new exhaust system.
                I checked and rechecked for leaks.  I found that the
emission hose from the
                left rocker arm cover to the connection under the carb
was not clamped tightly
                under the carb.  It was hard to believe this could leak
and cause a smell, but
                it did.  I had it pushed on the nipple, but not clamped
and that apparently
                was enough to cause a sickening smell.   Mark L.
