Chris-
I believe the car is called a Bricklin SV-1, designed and built by a kind of
infamous character by the name of Malcolm Bricklin, whose previous exploits
included importing the late, great Subaru 360cc micro car into the US.
The Bricklin "sports car" was meant to be a "high performance" vehicle with
the emphasis on safety. There were a number of novel features, including the
gull wing doors, which were supposed to be at the leading edge as far as
safety concerns went in the mid-70s, which is when the cars were built. The
cars never really caught on because of their porky nature (way overweight)
coupled with anemic 70's horsepower from the OEM engines used (AMC and Ford)
and lousy build quality. Bricklin was also unable to deliver the car at a
competitive price, finding himself in competition with Porsche and Ferrari's
Dino at the low to mid-teen pricing level, when the car should have cost
about half that. They are kind of like the DeLorean, only one decade earlier.
