Chris,
If the resistor came with the coil, use it. If you are using a
high energy ignition, like MSD-AL, there is a better coil -as
a coil with a resistor is designed for points.
If you didn't have the valve springs changed, you may be
experiencing valve float. The is especially suspect if the
springs were weak, at the rpm you mention is close to the
stock float limit anyway.
