Chris,
You really want that block cleaned of any residue BEFORE you stick a
delicate, corrosion prone, aluminum radiator into the car. May a trip to
a pro, with power-scrub beads in a back-flush will help.
On your submarine experience, I recall in all the sub movies the crew
were frantically patching walls and pipes to keep water OUT. Great
training for keeping water IN. {9->
