Gas Gauge

Hey and Howdy all,

This winter I am going to replace all of my dash gauges with aftermarket
(Accurate) units. I am thinking VDO or Autometer. A few issues come to mind
that the collective experience of the list might be able assist me with are:

1. Will 2 1/16 gauge fit into the existing dash holes?

2. Will most electronic Speedo units read the 'magnet on the driveshaft'
type of
     pickup?

3. Is the stock fuel sending unit any sort of standard? VDO and Autometer
make replacement senders; I wonder if they will fit into a Tiger tank?
This seems
to be my largest problem with the whole idea of gauge replacement. None
of the
aftermarket mfg.'s will tailor a gauge for a range of 21 to 145 ohms (is
21 empty or
    full)?

4. Most aftermarket Speedo and tach units are an industry standard of 3
1/8". The
Smiths unit is much larger. Any sanitary ideas for reducers or bezels
that would
take up the difference in diameter?

I know to the purists out there that this sounds like butchery; but I really
need gauges that reflect the TRUE state of events in the car. The good news
is that these mods can be reversed and the car returned to original condition.

As usual, I look forward to your collective wisdom.

Cheers

Gunny
