Jeff,

You are looking a at a Gano filter. It is discussed on
http://wwww.TigersUnited.com a lot, and can easily be found through the
"Search" button on the top black bar.

It consists of a filter screen cone trap for particles which could clog
your radiator, and is very worthwhile. They come in two flavours, a
"see-through" model, that allows you to view an impenetrable antifreeze,
and has no safety bumps to prevent the hose coming off, and a brass
housing with the safety bumps (recommended). I still put a couple of
stainless straps, made from hose clamp bands, with bent-over the clamp
ends, to prevent separation even with the ridges.

These are available through the CAT warehouse, for members, and through
most Mustang accessory shops.

They MUST be attended to on a regular basis until you figure out how
quickly you generate enough scale to clog the filter itself.
