What Stu and Larry said, both for the oil and temp situations. If your gauge 
stops
halfway down (or up) the gauge with the ignition off, it's hooped (that's a
technical term).

Interesting side note: My temp and fuel gauge needles vibrate when they're in 
the
first third of the range, but they're steady everywhere else (which means that 
for
the temp gauge, the vibration is not a serious problem ;) ). Is this a common
feature in Smiths electrical gauges?
