David, I have taken the speedo apart on both the Tiger and Alpine 
several times.  See article in United.

The current wisdom is that the speedo cable when the nut on the cable is 
screwed to the speedo is not support ot hit or bottom out on the 
receiver for the cable.   This is support to ruin the mechanism.

Current fixes are to measure the depth of the receiver, and length of 
the protrusion of the cable and grind off excess so it will not bottom 
out.   Another fix currently used by MoMa is to add a o ring to the 
cable, effectively moving the cable end away for bottom out in the speedo.

That said, I still don't see how a tight cable would effect the speedo, 
as there is just a gear on this part of the speedo for the odometer, and 
the speedo mechanism is floating in its own portion of the speedo.  See 
United article, or take yours apart.

In any event you can use current wisdom and if still not working then 
the magnet is probably weak, the mechanism is shot, or the jewel for the 
speedo is not there anymore.  $$$$$$ and a pro fix.
