The white smoke and hard running is probably being
caused by brake fluid. This mean your booster can
is filled again and the excess is being sucked into
the engine. A new check valve will not fix the
problem.
You going to have to redo your rebuild. Pay
particular attention to the bores and also that the
rubber seals are one direction. Your rebuild
instructions will tell which way the go in. If
the bores are scored you are sol. Look for
another to rebuild to have yours sleeved at
big bucks.

In the meantime bypass the unit and drive
the car until the weather changes for winter.
