Steve,
10 degrees initial with 32 to 34 total at 3000 RPM. The total is MORE
important than the initial timing as it is what will cause the pinging.
Depending on what you have built into the distributor for advance will limit
what you can set the initial at. It may be that if you have 14 degrees in
the distributor (14x2=26) typical for a stock unit to arrive at 34 total you
would set the timing at 6 ... setting it at 10 results in 36 total which may
be too much. Your engine may like 36 total but it may have too low initial
for any decent throttle response off idle. 
This is why I recommend an aftermarket distributor. This usually the single
biggest drivability and performance gain you can do.
