After reading about dipsticks and end caps I thought why not check the period
photos to see what the original cars had by way of dipsticks. I used the
Brooklands book of reprinted car tests to see what Rootes used in 1964 -5.

Sports Car Graphic - 11/64 3/4 page photo of engine compartment. Dipstick
tube extends to the top edge of the generator bracket. Dipstick has cap and
the handle is bent toward fender. The handle is long 2"- 3" with a circular
curl at end. This looks like the 1964 Ford dipstick photo posted by David
Franchi.

Road & Track - 11/64 Dipstick tube is the same but the stick ends at end of
tube with circular curl with cap.

Hot Rod - 1/65 Same as Road & Track.

Motor Trend - 11/65 1/2 page photo shows long handle dipstick the same as
Sports Car Graphic.

Autocar - 4/30/65 Dipstick same as R & T.

All of the later photos are the same as Autocar.

Every photo I could see showed a cap on the end of the dipstick and the
circular curl handle was at the very end of the stick. The only different
stick is the car tested by S C G and Motor Trend (Autocar 4/64 has a drawing
with this dipstick). The mystery is why the car tested by R & T and S C G
has a different dip stick handle.

                                                                 Jeff
