Rick from SS forwarded this onto me. This affects everyone from Rick to
TEAE, CAT, STOA, PTC, CATO et al:

I looked into blocking it.... we need support for this. I called the law
office in charge. I will keep everyone advised.

>Hi Richard,

>I will be away from e-mails for a few days so can't respond to you if
>you email me back. I thought you, among others, needed to know
>immediately about Michael T. Hughes (of 5805 State Bridge Road Duluth
>Georgia 30097) who has applied for US trademark for the brands
>"Sunbeam","Sunbeam Tiger" and "Sunbeam Alpine" with the U.S. Patent and
>Trademark Office.
>
>The trademark application of most pressing concern is Serial number
>78357854. My wife (who happens to be a Canadian trademark lawyer) has
>explained to me that this US trademark for "Sunbeam Tiger" is being
>published for opposition tomorrow. If no one opposes it in the next 60
>days, Michael T Hughes will own the US trademark and will have the right
>to stop everyone else from using it in the US, from selling products
>marked with the trademark, etc. (if they don't pay him a licensing
>fee.) Note that he has applied for the trademark not only for
>automobiles and automobile parts, but also T-shirts, sweat shirts, hats,
>etc. You can go to the US Patents and Trademarks Office's online
>database and take a look at all the wares he will have the exclusive
>right to sell in association with the trademark. (http://tarr.uspto.gov
>and then click for trademarks search....)
>
>If you do not want to lose your freedom to sell your Sunbeam products,
>my wife says you should go to a US trademark lawyer right away and ask
>him/her to file an opposition to Mr. Hughes' application. In Mr.
>Hughes' application for the US trademark he has had to swear an
>affidavit swearing that he was the first person to use the trademark,
>and therefore he should have the right to own it. -- I don't think it
>can be true that he was the first person to use it... (In the US, like
>Canada, whoever was the first person to use a trademark has the right to
>apply to register it.)
>
>Please forward this information to other enthusiasts who will be
>affected by this. For example, any Sunbeam club regalia sale would owe
>Mr Hughes a fee.
