The correct answer to your 1st question is Yes; maybe and NO.

If all the engines had their original parts, dipstick and dipstick
tube combination; then Yes the dipsticks should protrude the same amount.

If you have the wrong combination of parts but are close; you might
be OK. The Maybe

If you have a really bad combination of parts; the dipstick won't
even touch the oil. The NO

Ford made numerous changes with both of these parts. The parts for
the generator engine are different length from the Alternator engine and
there were several different lengths used throughout the years. I believe
there is 2" to 5" difference in the length of all these parts.

It is always a good practice to check where the oil is on the
dipstick with 4qts and 5qts of oil in the engine and the oil filter full;
just so you know. You can easily remark a dipstick for your combination of
parts.

Low oil level is bad because you will get metal wear somewhere from lack of
oil.

High oil level can foam the oil and cause metal wear from lack of oil or you
could hydraulic the engine and break something if there is too much oil in
the system.

A friend of mine once looked at a car that just had an oil change.
The car was blowing smoke out the tail pipe and dripping oil on the ground.
He pulled the cap off the oil filler and revved the engine some. He
watched the oil rise up the oil filler tube and shut the engine off. It
would seem someone forgot to drain the old oil and just put in more oil.
At least the owner of the car realized something was wrong and didn't hurt
the engine.

This may seem like a dumb question but I'm going to ask anyway. Wouldn't
all dipsticks made for a ford 260/289/302 protrude the same amount into the
oil pan?

The reason I'm asking is that when I put in my 347, I also replaced the
oilpan and just bought a new dipstick from the local Autozone. If it is
marked incorrectly, what engine damage would occur with too much oil? Too
little oil is a no-brainer.
