There's been lots of stuff written about this.
The lube in the gears in the speedo head have dried out and the bearing
is seized or so stiff that it seizes the cable end. The seized cable then
rounds the plastic gear that goes into the trans. The plastic gear is a
'fuse'. Best to strip that gear then damage the steel drive gear inside
the trans. The steel drive rarely goes bad.
Pull the cable and covering out of the speed end. Pus down on the
cable end with your thumb. Then drive very slowly. If the cable doesn't
turn easily or skips, your gear is shot. Pull the gear out of the
trans and replace it with one from your Ford dealer. The original gear
had 15 teeth and have not been available for years. There are 16, 17,
up to 20 available. Each count adds about 3 mph to the speedo
reading.
Test again with the new gear. You should have fixed that end.
Dont stop here or you have wasted your time and money. Pull
the speedo and test it. Insert something with a sqaure end into
the gear drive and turn the speedo gear by hand. It must be
free and easy. A drop of oil may help free the gear up. Don't
over lube. Lube with graphite not oil. Oil freezes in the winter.
Too many miles on the speedo. Use a drill and run it in reverse
and watch the miles disappear.
That should fix you for a while. In the meantime plan on
having the speedo rebuilt. Tger Tom used to do this. I think
Nissonger in upper New York or Momo rebuilds speedo.
