Coincidentally, I've been running one of those little cube fuel pumps
too for years and am thinking I need to change it to a better one. I
switched to the cube after my stock pump failed two times in one year.
The cube pump has run for the last several years but I had vapor lock
problems yesterday ... stalling at idle after sitting with the engine
off for a while after driving in 90 degree weather. Hottest day of the
year so far here in Arizona. It would re-start immediately after
stalling and drive OK, but stall again when I got to the next stop
light. By the time I got it home after a 10 minute run, it idled fine again.

I just checked my under the hood fuel pressure gauge I have installed
right before my Holley carb.. On immediate cold start up, I get 4 1/2
pounds of pressure. Five minutes or so later, when the engine is at
running temperature (180-190 degrees), fuel pressure has dropped to
slightly over 3 pounds. That's what it read yesterday when I had the
stalling problem. Is this normal, or should I be getting a constant 4
1/2 pounds of pressure no matter what the water temp? I wonder if this
is what's contributing to what seems to be vapor lock. Maybe the pump is
not strong enough to push the fuel through in hot weather?

By the way, I already have my mufflers heat shielded, and have the fuel
line wrapped with Thermotec heat shield all the way from the tanks to
the carb.

The next question is if I change, which pump should I change to? I get
about 250 HP at the rear wheels now, if that may be a determining
factor. Has anyone out there had vapor lock issues, change to another
fuel pump, and solved the problem?

Steve Sage

P.S..I'm going to post separately now on my successful intake manifold
upgrade for anyone interested.
