The only way to correctly ID the block is by the part number stamped onto
the block near the starter.

A 2nd way is to look for the engine build date stamp near the distributor
and left head. It will be a 4 or 5 digit number.
This could eliminate the 302 which started production in 1968.

Also if you have stock intake and heads on the engine most likely the block
under them is the same.
289 intakes have 289 on 1 of the runners; the head have 289 in the casting
under the valve cover.
260 intakes just have a part # on the runner; the heads only have a casting
date under the valve cover.

If you need help with the part numbers of date codes, let me know.
Part numbers you can probably Google and get results.

Is there a way to tell if a small block Ford is a 260, 289 or a 302?
