Are you sure the hub is loose on the shaft? It would be more likely that
you're just seeing backlash from the differential.

The correct torque for the rear hub nuts is 125 foot-pounds. If you
still have play between the hub and the axle shaft after applying this
amount of torque to the nut, then the rear hub to axle interface is
completely wiped out and you will most likely be looking for both an
axle and a hub...

The key doesn't really have any function when the axle and hub are both
in good shape, under normal circumstances... The taper fit and the
torque applied to the rear hub nut should give enough interference
between the hub and axle that it would take some fantastic amount of
torque to break the engagement between the two. The key just acts to
make sure that even if you were to somehow apply too much torque, that
it doesn't slip the axle in the hub and start a destructive process.
