Hi Andy,
 
The voltage at the resistor will be lower when the points are closed than  
when they are open due to the higher current going through it to the coil. 
 
    *   Put a jumper wire from points terminal on the coil to ground.  
    *   Measure the voltage between ground and the resistor to coil 
terminal  . As I remember, It should read around 6 to 6.9 volts.
