Funny this would come up. I just came across them this weekend. I have a
pair of driving lights that were on my friend's BMW 2002 back in the day.
He rediscovered them when moving, and gave them to me to go on my son's
Jeep. They'd look real cool mounted in front of the grill. But bits of the
Jeep frame started falling off from rust... Anyway they would look real ugly
on his new GTI, which has killer lights already.

So there the sit. Two 5 3/4 inch lamp holders with 4453 bulbs in them.
Don't recognize the number? Well, they aren't usually found on cars. They
are 100 watt aircraft landing lights. Sealed beam with a real pencil spot
beam. I thought of using them as "curb feelers". Out in the sticks where I
live there are numerous roads where the side of the road is just not that
distinct at night in the rain, etc. Point them to the side and slightly
down, and those things would find the side, easily.

My friend had a lot of fun with them, getting folks to dim their oncoming
headlights, etc. On a slight highway uphill, he once flashed at a local
traffic helicopter, and the pilot flashed back. (Joe Green, for any Boston
area guys on here).

The bulbs are spec'd to have a 24 hour life, not much for use as full time
headlights.

But, have you noticed that today's cars, and many trucks, just don't have a
place to put any but the smallest (and useless) additional lights, without
them sticking out and looking real ugly? I thought of them for the Sunbeam,
replacing the "square 8"clones now under my bumper. But I'd have to redo
the wiring for twice the power.

Stu
