Gary and all,
I used to do flags and communications in the early sixties. Our flag stations
were right next to the pavement on the inside of the turns.
We always had two flagmen standing facing one another so we could warn each
other if an out of control car was coming either way. The instructions were
always, "Never run, because the drivers can try to miss you if you stay in one
place. Just jump at the last second."
There were a couple of close calls, but the worst experience was the noise from
a six-cylinder Mercury outboard in a Modified. The engine was laid on its side
with six pipes coming out the side about a foot from us. It was a beautiful
little car, but brutal with a hangover after the Saturday night party.
I sure am glad I was still immortal then because I wouldn't trade the memories
for anything!
